To consolidate super funds in Australia, choose one superannuation account to keep and roll eligible balances from your other accounts into it. You can usually request a transfer through ATO online services in myGov or through the receiving fund. Before moving money, check insurance, fees, investment options and any defined-benefit entitlements.

A rollover keeps money within the super system. It is not a cash withdrawal. Confirm the transfer has arrived and direct future employer contributions to the intended fund.

What Does Consolidating Super Funds Mean?

Consolidating super means combining the balances of two or more superannuation accounts into one chosen account through a super rollover. The retained fund receives the money; the transferring accounts are generally closed after a full transfer, subject to fund conditions and outstanding transactions.

For example, a worker with three accumulation accounts can keep one account and transfer the balances from the other two. The remaining balance is then invested according to the receiving fund's investment option. Any insurance attached to the closed accounts requires a separate review. For account basics, see what superannuation is and how it works.

Benefits and Risks of Combining Super

Combining super can reduce duplicate fees and account administration, but a rollover may cancel insurance or remove valuable scheme benefits. Fewer accounts do not automatically mean a better financial outcome.

Potential benefit or risk What to check
Fewer accounts Whether all contributions will reach the retained fund
Reduced duplicate administration fees Total administration, investment and insurance costs after the transfer
Easier tracking Account balances, transactions and beneficiary nominations
Insurance cancellation Death, total and permanent disability (TPD) and income protection cover
Loss of special entitlements Defined-benefit rights, employer arrangements and legacy features

According to ASIC MoneySmart, Consolidating super funds (22 July 2026), compare your options and review insurance before consolidating. Keeping two accounts may be preferable if retaining one preserves insurance or other benefits that cannot readily be replaced. How to Find All Your Super Accounts

Use ATO online services linked to myGov to find recorded superannuation accounts, including accounts you no longer contribute to and eligible lost super records. Cross-check them against your statements because reporting and displayed balances can differ from current fund records.

  1. Sign in to myGov and access the linked Australian Taxation Office service.
  2. Open the super account information and review listed accounts and any ATO-held super.
  3. Record each fund name, member number, current balance, fees and insurance.
  4. Contact the trustee of any missing or unfamiliar account.
  5. Reconcile recent employer contributions before deciding which accounts to transfer.

A lost super account held by a trustee differs from money transferred to and held by the ATO. Check the relevant record before starting a rollover. To understand how your current salary affects future contributions, use superannuation Calculator Australia.

How to Choose Which Super Fund to Keep

Keep the fund whose fees, investment risk, insurance and account features best suit your circumstances. The largest existing balance or familiar brand is not enough to decide.

Decision factor Compare before selecting
Fees Administration charges, investment fees, transaction costs and insurance premiums
Investments Comparable investment options, asset allocation, risk and long-term net performance
Insurance Cover limits, premiums, exclusions, waiting periods and eligibility
Scheme benefits Defined-benefit conditions, employer contributions and legacy benefits
Practical needs Member service, online access and ability to receive employer contributions

For relevant MySuper products, the ATO's YourSuper comparison tool can help with fund comparison. Review super investment returns when comparing investment options. Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and applicable insurance guide. Compare similar risk categories and periods; past investment returns do not guarantee future performance. Check Insurance and Special Benefits Before Transferring

Review all insurance attached to an account before any full rollover. Closing the account can end death cover, TPD insurance or income protection, and cover at the receiving fund may have different costs, conditions or exclusions.

Record the insured amount, premiums, policy eligibility and restrictions. If you want to transfer or replace cover, apply and obtain written confirmation that the new cover is active before closing the old account. Particular care is warranted where health conditions, occupation, age restrictions or waiting periods affect new cover.

Defined-Benefit and Employer-Specific Accounts

A defined-benefit account requires a separate assessment before transfer. Its benefit may depend on salary, service and scheme rules rather than an ordinary investment balance. Some schemes restrict transfers or prevent members from rejoining after leaving.

Ask the scheme administrator for written confirmation of transfer eligibility, the estimated exit value, the rights surrendered and any employer-specific benefits. Seek appropriately licensed financial advice where the decision involves complex or irreversible entitlements. Source: ASIC MoneySmart, Defined benefit super explained (14 August 2026).

  4. Choose the fund to retain and the eligible account or balances to transfer.

Other Ways to Transfer Super

You can also request a rollover through the receiving fund or an ATO rollover form. A fund may offer a secure member portal, direct transfer service or transfer authority form.

Have the transferring fund's details available and follow official identity checks. If you made a personal contribution and intend to claim a tax deduction, lodge a valid notice of intent with the original fund and obtain its acknowledgement before rolling over that amount. Otherwise, you may lose the ability to claim the intended deduction. Ask whether the fund permits a partial rollover when you want to preserve an insurance-linked account. Never give identity documents or your tax file number to an unsolicited caller.

How Long Does a Super Transfer Take?

Processing time depends on the funds and the type of rollover. Identity checks, scheme restrictions, pending transactions or missing data can delay completion. Do not assume every request will settle within a fixed number of days.

Retain the submission receipt and track the outgoing transaction at the former fund and incoming payment at the receiving fund. If amounts differ, ask both trustees whether fees, premiums, market movement or outstanding contributions explain the difference.

Check Where Your Employer Pays Future Super

A rollover does not automatically change your employer's payroll instructions. Tell your employer which fund should receive future super guarantee payments and supply the required fund-choice information, including the USI and member number where relevant.

Check the receiving fund's transaction history after the next payday. Since 1 July 2026, Payday Super generally requires employer contributions to reach the fund within seven business days of payday, subject to exceptions. Estimate the expected amount using super Contributions Calculator Australia and compare it with the fund's actual receipt. Tax and Preservation Rules for Rollovers

A normal rollover between complying Australian super funds is generally not a cash withdrawal. Preserved benefits ordinarily remain subject to the same access restrictions, and the transfer itself does not release the savings for personal use.

Tax and transfer rules differ for untaxed benefits, certain defined-benefit schemes and overseas arrangements. Request fund-specific tax information for an unusual transfer. For related concepts, see superannuation tax in Australia and when you can access super.

When You Might Keep More Than One Account

Keeping separate accounts can be reasonable when it protects insurance or scheme benefits. For example, a person may retain an account with TPD cover that is unavailable at the receiving fund while using another accumulation fund for current employment contributions. Confirm whether an inactive account will keep its insurance and whether a minimum balance or fresh contributions are required.

Compare the extra ongoing fees and premiums against the benefits retained. Review minimum account balance and activity requirements so existing insurance is not unintentionally cancelled.

Troubleshooting a Missing myGov Transfer Option

If Transfer super is missing, check that myGov is linked to the ATO and review which accounts appear in Super > Manage. The online rollover option may not be available for a single account or certain products.

Confirm missing account data with the trustee. For an ineligible or unavailable online transfer, ask the receiving fund for its direct rollover process or use the appropriate ATO form.

How to Check Your Transfer and Avoid Scams

Confirm the rollover has been credited to the intended member account before treating consolidation as complete. Check the final statement from the outgoing fund, the receiving transaction and the status of insurance and future contributions.

Check Evidence to retain
Receiving account Fund statement showing the incoming rollover
Transferring account Exit or transfer statement and account status
Insurance Written confirmation of retained or replacement cover
Employer contributions Updated fund-choice information and subsequent contribution record
Security Direct access through official myGov or fund websites

Avoid unsolicited offers promising guaranteed high returns or pressing you to move your super immediately. Fraudsters may imitate fund websites or contact members about transferring super to a self-managed super fund. Do not disclose myGov credentials or identity documents through unsolicited links. Use independently verified contact details when speaking with a fund. Source: ASIC MoneySmart, Superannuation scams (12 October 2026).

Is it free to consolidate super funds?

YES, the ATO's myGov transfer service is free for eligible super accounts. Ongoing fund fees, insurance premiums and optional advice costs remain relevant. Review current disclosure documents before choosing the receiving fund.

Can you combine your super without myGov?

YES, contact the receiving super fund or use the relevant ATO rollover form. The receiving fund can explain its secure transfer process and identification requirements. Check insurance and special entitlements whichever channel you use.

Can you transfer super while keeping your existing insurance?

YES, sometimes. Keeping the insurance-linked account open or arranging suitable replacement cover before a full transfer can protect continuity. Insurance does not automatically follow a rollover. Confirm the fund's partial-transfer, minimum-balance and insurance rules in writing.

Does consolidating super close your old account?

YES, a full rollover generally closes the transferring accumulation account once all money is transferred, subject to the fund's rules and outstanding transactions. A partial rollover can leave the original account active. Confirm the final status with the trustee.

Can you transfer ATO-held lost super?

YES, eligible ATO-held super can generally be transferred to a complying fund through ATO online services, subject to its circumstances. Check whether the money is held by the ATO or remains in a lost account with a fund.

Can spouses combine their super accounts into one account?

NO, spouses generally cannot merge individually owned super interests into one jointly owned member account through ordinary consolidation. Spouse contributions and contribution splitting follow separate eligibility and tax rules.

Do you need to tell your employer after changing super funds?

YES, provide payroll with the preferred fund details through the employer's applicable choice process. Moving an existing balance does not necessarily redirect future payments. Confirm receipt of the next employer contribution.
