Age Pension Calculator: Income Test, Assets Test and Eligibility

Estimate a possible Australian Age Pension payment using the current standard income and assets tests. See the effect of deeming, household type and homeownership, with each test shown separately.

This is an indicative estimator, not a Centrelink entitlement decision. Residence, Work Bonus, transitional rates, non-standard supplements, overseas rules and complex assets require separate assessment.

What Does an Age Pension Calculator Estimate?

An Australian Age Pension calculator estimates a possible government pension payment under the income test and assets test. It helps distinguish full, part and nil payment scenarios. This tool displays the estimated fortnightly rate and the lower result of the two tests. Services Australia, not this website, assesses actual entitlement.

Who Is Eligible for the Australian Age Pension?

Age Pension age is generally 67. You must also meet residence requirements and financial means tests. Reaching 67 does not automatically establish entitlement. This estimator checks the entered ages but cannot verify residence history, visa circumstances or evidence supporting a claim. What Details Do You Need for an Age Pension Estimate?

Enter household type, homeownership, age, total assessable assets, the financial-assets portion and other assessable fortnightly income. Financial assets must already be included in total assets; adding their deemed earnings again as other income would double-count them. For couples, use combined assets and income. You can use the Superannuation Calculator Australia to estimate employer super separately, then check which amounts are assessable for Age Pension.

How Do Income and Assets Tests Calculate Your Pension?

For a standard Age Pension assessment, Services Australia applies both tests. The test producing the lower pension rate generally determines the amount, subject to eligibility and special payment rules. For example, if an income test gives A$1,100 and an assets test A$1,050 per fortnight, the indicative result is A$1,050, before special eligibility and payment rules. The calculator displays both intermediate rates so you can check the result.

How Does the Age Pension Income Test Work?

From 20 September 2026, a single pensioner's standard income free area is A$226 per fortnight, after which the pension reduces by A$0.50 per additional dollar. For a couple, combined income up to A$396 is free; the reduction is A$0.25 per additional dollar for each partner, or A$0.50 across the couple. For a single person with A$326 of assessable income, the income-test reduction is A$50 per fortnight. Source: Services Australia, Income test for Age Pension, updated 20 September 2026.

How Does Deeming Affect Savings and Super?

Deeming treats financial investments as earning a prescribed annual rate for the income test. From 20 September 2026, the rates are 1.75% on the first A$66,800 of a single person's financial assets or A$110,600 of a pension couple's combined assets, and 3.75% above that threshold. The annual deemed amount is divided by 26 for a fortnightly estimate. Not every super interest is assessable: for example, a younger partner's accumulation-phase super can receive different treatment. How Does the Age Pension Assets Test Work?

For the standard assets test effective 20 September 2026, pension reductions start above the asset-free thresholds below. Each A$1,000 over the threshold reduces a single rate by A$3 per fortnight, or each partner's rate by A$1.50.

HouseholdHomeownerNon-homeowner
Single, full-pension thresholdA$333,000A$600,000
Couple, combined thresholdA$499,000A$766,000

The ordinary part-pension cut-offs also depend on household status; this estimate calculates the reduction from the asset-free amount and limits payments to zero. Separate cut-offs can apply with Rent Assistance and unusual circumstances. Source: Services Australia, Assets test for Age Pension, updated 20 September 2026.

Does Your Principal Home Count as an Asset?

NO, your usual principal home is generally exempt from the assets test, although homeowner households have lower asset-free limits. Additional land, business use, retirement-village arrangements and temporarily vacated homes can need separate treatment.

How Are Couples Assessed for the Age Pension?

Couples are generally assessed using their combined assets and income, with a separate maximum pension rate per partner. This tool covers only couples where both partners are at least 67. If only one partner is eligible, or the couple is separated because of illness, specialised rates and asset-treatment rules apply; use a Services Australia assessment rather than treating either person as single.

What Is the Difference Between Age Pension and Super Pension Income?

The Age Pension is a government means-tested income-support payment. An account-based pension is funded from your own super. Both may be received together, but assessable super interests can affect government benefits. To estimate additional super paid into an account, see the Super Contributions Calculator Australia. For a projection of accumulated super before retirement, use the Super Projection Calculator Australia.

How Can You Check an Age Pension Calculation?

Calculate the standard rate after each test independently, then use the smaller rate. A single homeowner with A$353,000 assessable assets has A$20,000 above the A$333,000 full-rate threshold: A$20,000 ÷ A$1,000 × A$3 = A$60 fortnightly assets-test reduction. Compare this with the separate income-tested reduction and select the lower resulting pension rate. This example isolates the assets test and is not a complete entitlement decision.

How Does Working Affect the Age Pension Estimate?

The Work Bonus can exclude some eligible employment or self-employment earnings from the income test. Its standard A$300 per-fortnight amount and accumulated balance have specific rules. This tool does not calculate Work Bonus balances. Enter other assessable income after a separately verified adjustment, and report work income as required. Source: Services Australia, Work Bonus, accessed October 2026.

When Do Age Pension Rates and Thresholds Change?

Maximum pension rates are normally adjusted in March and September; income, assets and deeming parameters can change on other effective dates. This calculator uses the 20 September 2026 standard rates. Check the assessment date and Services Australia's latest figures before making financial decisions.

Why Might Your Actual Age Pension Payment Differ From an Estimate?

Actual entitlement depends on more than standard rates: residence, partner eligibility, defined benefit streams, special asset treatment, Rent Assistance, Work Bonus, transitional pensions, living overseas and changes in your circumstances can all change the result. The estimate does not verify these conditions. Compare figures with Services Australia before applying.

Can You Receive the Age Pension While Owning Your Home?

YES, owning a principal home does not automatically exclude Age Pension eligibility. The home is generally exempt, but the lower homeowner assets threshold applies.

Can You Receive Age Pension and Super Payments Together?

YES, you may receive government Age Pension and super income concurrently if you meet the means tests. Assessable super interests affect the calculation.

Is Age Pension Automatically Payable at 67?

NO, Age Pension age alone does not establish entitlement; residence, income, assets and claiming rules also apply.

Does the Lower Means-Test Rate Apply?

YES, for standard Age Pension assessment the lower of the income-tested and assets-tested rates generally determines the pension amount.

Can an Age Pension Calculator Guarantee Entitlement?

NO, only Services Australia decides entitlement after reviewing the facts and applicable legislation. This calculator is an estimate.

Can Your Age Pension Be Zero Despite Reaching Pension Age?

YES, a payment can be nil because of income, assets or other unmet eligibility requirements, even at age 67 or above.
