What does a retirement income calculator estimate?
A retirement income calculator estimates withdrawals from super over time, together with any other income that is separately modelled. For an employer contribution estimate before retirement, use the Superannuation Calculator Australia. The Super Projection Calculator Australia instead estimates the amount accumulated by retirement. This tool starts with a balance you expect to hold at retirement.
What should I enter in the calculator?
Enter the balance at retirement, age at retirement, annual spending requirement, net return, administration fees and inflation. If you have independently established an Age Pension estimate, enter it separately; otherwise leave the value at zero.
How much annual, monthly or fortnightly income could my super provide?
Annual super income is determined by the selected spending need after other entered income, subject to account-based pension minimum withdrawals and the available balance. Divide the annual figure by 12 for a monthly equivalent or by 26 for a fortnightly equivalent. These equivalents do not specify your super fund's actual payment schedule.
How is retirement income from super calculated?
For each modelled year the calculator applies monthly investment returns, deducts monthly administration fees and makes monthly withdrawals towards spending and the applicable minimum account-based pension payment, subject to available funds. Spending and the manually entered Age Pension amount rise with inflation. The tool does not project contributions before retirement or calculate Age Pension eligibility.
The account balance follows a monthly recurrence: opening balance × (1 + effective monthly net return), less separately entered monthly fees and the super withdrawal. The effective monthly return is calculated from the annual net return. The yearly minimum drawdown uses the opening balance for that modelled year. Payments and fees stop at the available account balance, rather than producing a negative balance.
To check the arithmetic independently, consider a simplified annual example, which is not a reproduction of this tool's monthly payment timing:
| Calculation step | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Opening account-based pension balance | A$400,000 |
| Investment earnings at an assumed 5% | +A$20,000 |
| Administration fees | −A$1,000 |
| Withdrawal at year end | −A$24,000 |
| Closing pension balance | A$395,000 |
The A$24,000 withdrawal is equivalent to A$2,000 per month, but the illustration assumes one year-end payment. For an age-67 account-based pension holder, A$24,000 also exceeds the standard 5% minimum on an A$400,000 reference balance. Actual results differ when returns, fees and withdrawals occur throughout the year.
How long will my super last in retirement?
Super lasts until the projected account balance reaches zero under the selected assumptions. Depletion depends on opening savings, returns, fees and withdrawals. If the account remains positive at the final modelled age, the output reports that no depletion occurred within the selected horizon.
How does the Age Pension affect retirement income?
The Australian Government Age Pension can supplement super income from age 67 for eligible people. The input is a user-supplied hypothetical annual amount, not a verified pension entitlement. Services Australia applies residence rules, an income test and an assets test. This calculator accepts a pension amount supplied by you but does not determine eligibility or adjust it automatically as super assets decline. Verify your estimate through Services Australia before including it. What happens before I reach Age Pension age?
Before 67, the model assumes zero Age Pension income. People retiring before that age need accessible super, work income or other savings to cover the intervening years. Preservation age and a condition of release determine when super can be accessed.
How does retirement age change the projection?
Retiring later reduces the number of projected withdrawal years. To compare ages 60 and 67, calculate an appropriate starting balance for each retirement date using the Super Projection Calculator Australia, then enter each balance here with the corresponding age.
What happens when partners retire at different times?
Different retirement dates change the household's employment income, super withdrawals and potential Age Pension eligibility. This calculator models one super balance and one manually entered pension amount. It does not combine partner accounts or perform couple means tests; calculate separate super drawdowns and assess household benefits separately.
How do investment returns, fees and inflation affect income?
Higher net returns increase projected balances; fees and withdrawals reduce them. Inflation increases the nominal spending target through time. The annual table presents future-dollar cash flows and the closing super balance discounted into starting-retirement-year dollars using the entered inflation rate. A consistent return is a simplification rather than an investment forecast.
How can an early market downturn change the outcome?
A negative investment return early in retirement leaves a smaller capital base while withdrawals continue. That can reduce the amount available for later recovery. This calculator uses a fixed annual return and therefore does not simulate sequences of different market returns.
How do minimum pension drawdowns change super income?
Standard account-based pensions have age-based minimum annual withdrawals. The model uses 4% below age 65, 5% from 65 to 74, 6% from 75 to 79, 7% from 80 to 84, 9% from 85 to 89, 11% from 90 to 94 and 14% from age 95. The minimum is calculated from the opening annual balance, approximating the 1 July account balance rule. It does not model first-year pro-rating, specialised pension products or a future change in minimum factors. How do renting and irregular expenses affect your retirement target?
Rent, mortgage payments and irregular large purchases increase the money required. Enter a realistic annual spending amount. This simplified model does not accept one-off expenses; calculate alternative scenarios by adjusting the target and review separate cash flow plans for irregular costs.
How can I compare projected income with retirement spending?
The annual spending shortfall is the amount of the spending target that remains unfunded after projected super withdrawals and the manually entered Age Pension amount. If minimum pension withdrawals exceed required spending, that excess is included in super income and the shortfall stays at zero.
What can I change if my retirement income is too low?
Compare starting balances, retirement ages, spending targets, fees and realistic net investment assumptions. Additional contributions before retirement remain subject to eligibility rules and Super Contributions Calculator Australia limits and contribution categories. Higher assumed returns are not a guaranteed solution to a shortfall.
How do I check the calculator result against my super statement?
Check your selected retirement starting balance against your latest fund statement and any separate accumulation-to-retirement estimate. Confirm whether the investment return already deducts investment fees and tax, then enter administration fees only if they are not included. Compare the first-year drawdown with the age-based minimum and review the annual table for the year in which the balance reaches zero.
For a second calculation, ASIC Moneysmart's Account-based pension calculator provides an independent modelling reference. Results are not directly comparable unless the opening balance, withdrawals, pension start age, return assumptions, fees, inflation and payment timing are aligned. Differences do not, by themselves, prove that either tool is incorrect.
How reliable is my retirement income estimate?
This is an illustrative mathematical model. It does not calculate personal income tax, future rule changes, Age Pension means tests, variable returns, longevity beyond the chosen horizon, transfer balance cap restrictions or product-specific rules. The first-year Age Pension input applies only at age 67 or later, even when retirement begins earlier. The selected starting balance is treated entirely as an account-based pension; amounts exceeding an individual’s available transfer balance cap require separate treatment. Check the assumptions, review the year-by-year table and consult official guidance before making a financial decision.
Can I receive Age Pension income and super pension payments together?
YES, eligible people can receive both. The Age Pension is subject to Services Australia's income and assets tests, so super pension payments do not guarantee an Age Pension entitlement.
Can I retire before Age Pension age?
YES, retirement can occur before 67. Super access still depends on preservation age and a condition of release, and Age Pension eligibility starts no earlier than the applicable pension age.
Does the calculator guarantee my retirement income?
NO, its results depend on assumed returns, inflation, fees and withdrawals. Neither investment outcomes nor Age Pension eligibility is guaranteed.
Can my super run out during retirement?
YES, the projected balance reaches zero if withdrawals and fees exhaust the investment. The calculator displays depletion within the selected horizon when it occurs.
Can I choose a higher drawdown than the minimum?
YES, standard account-based pensions generally permit withdrawals above the age-based minimum. Higher withdrawals can reduce future balances and income.
Does renting affect how much retirement income I need?
YES, renting affects annual housing expenditure. Include rent within the spending target rather than assuming a homeowner's retirement budget.
Are retirement income projections shown in today's dollars?
NO, the annual projection table shows future dollars, with spending and any manually entered Age Pension increasing at the assumed inflation rate. The first retirement year uses the amounts entered for that year.
